Today we had an interesting retreat day guided by Noelene Bangel. The day was attended by the current acolytes as well as 5 aspirants (some 3 more were unable to attend). Further details and some photos will be provided by David Baker soon. Acolytes are a very important part of our Church. They lead the procession of ministers into the sanctuary as they carry the Processional Cross. Acolytes also help with preparing the sacred space before Mass, inviting families to bring up the Offertory gifts, welcome new members to Mass, setting up the altar and distributing Holy Communion. When a baptism occurs in our parish, the acolyte stands next to the priest assisting him in several ways throughout the ceremony. Acolytes participate in other special events during the week in worship as well as prayer services and Bible Study, too. Historically, the acolyte's role has been to assist the minister during the worship service, especially at the Lord's Table. The acolyte was in transition to becoming a priest. Some however did not continue on to ordination to priesthood. Because the work of an acolyte had to do with the sacred and holy things of worship the Order of Acolyte emerged as a ministry in its own right. This indicates how important the work of an acolyte has been to the church throughout the years. In today's modern church the acolyte still plays an important role in the Mass and is still understood as the priest's helper during the sacred liturgy. Special training sessions are held for those who are invited to become an acolyte. Refresher classes are also held about once a year. During these training sessions the acolyte candidate learns not only what to do, but why. Being an acolyte is not something to be taken lightly. It is a ministry, a service to God in the House of the Lord. The acolyte has an important role in leading the congregation in its worship of God. For more information about the role of an acolyte please ask me. Participants in the Acolytes Retreat held last weekend Danny Patos, Chris Hersey, Edgar Pitargue, Ray King, Enzeigh Thomas,Peter Quigley, Paul Bodel, Jess Domingo, Bradley Wilkinson,David Baker and Otto Henfling. |
